Hyperthyroidism can be treated in different ways such as pharmacologically, through radioactive iodide, and thyroidectomy. Drugs such as PTU and methimazole can be used to decrease the thyroid hormone production. Radioactive iodide reduces the thyroid hormone burden and thus shrinks the thyroid gland which can help facilitate the removal. Lastly thyroidectomy can be used to remove the thyroid gland, which would put the patient in a hypothyroid state.
