In a song choir there are 5 boys. They make up 1/8 of the members of the choir. How many girls are in the choir?

Please show me how to solve it.

This is a proportion problem.  1/8 = 5/x where x is the number of people in the choir.
Cross multiply to get x = 40.  The number of girls is x - 5.

5 x 8 = 40 ÷ 1/8 = 5
