JY, you left off the parenthesis. We are multiplying the difference of x and 14 by 3, not just the x. Same on the other side: we are multiplying the sum of x and 12 by 6, not just the x.
3(x-14) = 6(x+12)
3x - 42 = 6x + 72
-42 = 3x + 72
-114 = 3x
-38 = x
