Red and blue balloons are in a box. how many blue balloon are there?

josh finds that 1/8 of the balloons are blue and that there are 120 more red ballooons than blue.

 N is the total number of balloons in the box.

 

 R is the number of red balloons

 B is the number of blue balloons

 

 R = B +120

 

1/8 N = B ---> N = 8B

7/8N = B+120

 

Substitutes the first equation into the second:

 (7/8)(8B) = B + 120

 7B = B + 120

6B = 120

B = 20

 

20 blue balloons.

 

R = B+120 = 140 red balloons.

 

The total is N = 20 + 140 = 160

 

CHECK:

 20 out of 160 = 1/8

140/160 = 7/8

 

20 blue, 140 red
