Word Problem with Percentages

Question

A train from Salt Lake City to Boise makes up 30% of your trip. You fly 400 miles from Boise to Spokane and take the bus 300 miles to Seattle. What % of the trip was traveled by bus? I believe the answer if 30% but I don't know what process is used to get to that answer.

"Word problems" nowadays often seem to be written inexpertly.l I believe that much of this occurs due to Common Core.

 

What does it mean to say that a train makes up 30% of a trip?  Does it refer to time of travel, or distance?  That's very important!! Without proper definitive, clear specifications that are unambiguous, a question cannot be answered. There never should be any need for a person to ASSUME something that is needed to advance a problem.

 

Accordingly, I attempt no answer, and downvote this submission.
