Distance Word problem

Question

Fred travels 3 mph from his house. John leaves his house and travels 2 mph. If the distance between the houses is 4 miles, how long will it take for them to meet?

Answer 1

Rate x time=distance

The rate of Fred is 3mph
The rate of John is 2mph
The distance to be traveled is 4miles (however, since Fred’s rate is faster he will cover more miles than John.)
The unknown is time

Thus:
3x + 2x =4
5x=4
x=4/5 hours or 48 minutes
Fred will travel 2.4 miles and John will travel 1.6 miles
