Jason is a bricklayer. He can lay 40 bricks in 50 minutes. At that rate, how many bricks can he lay in 20 minutes

This is a ratio problem:

^{40 bricks} / _{50 min} = ^x / _{20 min}

 

We can start by factoring out a 10 in the first ratio:

^{4 bricks} / _{5 min} = ^x / _{20 min}

We then multiply both sides by 20 minutes:

^{4 bricks * 20 min} / _{5 min} = x

We can factor out a 5, from the numerator and denominator, and cancel out minutes:

^{4 bricks * 4} / ₁ = x

Dividing by 1 is itself, so we can remove that:

4 bricks * 4 = x

Solve that last bit, and you'll have the number of bricks laid down.

50b = (40)(20)      product means/extremes

50b = 800

b = 16

 

Or

 

20 minutes is 2/5 of 50 minutes

therefore
