Let the usual wage be x per hour.  The overtime wage is (1.5)x.  The (regular) work week is 40 hrs. for which he gets (40)(x).  He worked overtime for 55-40=15 hours. The overtime wage is (15)(1.5)x.  The total wage, (40)x + 15 (1.5)x is given to be 1000.  Hence

 

40 x + 22.5 x = 1000

 

62.5 x = 1000

 

x = 1000/62.5 = 16

In this case, y = 55-40 = 15.

 

1000 = 40x + 1.5xy

1000 = 40x + 1.5*x*(15)

1000 = 40x + 22.5x
