The sum of the digits of a two-digit number is 13. The units digit is one more than twice the tens digit. Find the number.

The 2 digit number is ab (not the product of a and b, but the digits a and b, in order).

 

a + b = 13

b = 2a + 1

 

Solve this system by substitution.

 

a + (2a + 1) = 13

 

3a + 1 = 13

 

a = 4

 

b = 2a + 1 = 2(4) + 1 = 9

 

The number is 49.
