3x+4-x=5x-10-x

Hi, Cynthia.  

 

I would start by combining like terms on both sides of the equation so that it becomes

 

2x+4= 4x-10

 

Next, I would subtract 2x from both sides to get

 

4=2x-10

 

I would then add 10 to both sides, resulting in

 

14 = 2x 

 

Dividing by 2 gives the answer x=7.  

 

We can check this answer by substituting 7 into the original equation as follows

 

3(7)+4-7 = 5(7)-10-7

 

21+4-7 = 35-10-7

 

25-7 = 25-7

 

18 = 18
