multiply fractions

Mrs. Schutt uses 1/3 stick of butter in a sauce. She then uses 5/8 of the remaining butter to make garlic bread. What fraction of the stick of butter is left?

We use 1/3 so we then have 2/3 left

We use 5/8 of the 2/3 or (5/8)(2/3) = 5/12

 

2/3 - 5/12 = 8/12 - 5/12 = 3/12 = 1/4 left
