Subtract 3 from both sides:  3 - 3 = -4x + 3 - 3

 

Combine:  0 = -4x

 

Divide by -4:  0/-4 = -4x/-4

 

Solve:  0 = x

3 = x + 3 - 5x

 

First subtract 3 from both sides:  3 -3 = x + 3 -3 -5x  

 

This leaves us with 0 = x - 5x = -4x

 

Which only has a solution x = 0
