it seems to me that the # of student in Max's class has to be 30.

If there are 12 boys in it, that means 18 girls are in it.

 

v  = 15 = # volunteers = ½•n where n is number of students.  Therefore n=30.

b+g = 30 but b=12 therefore g=18, by the miracle called Algebra.
