Use the Factor Theorem to determine whether the binomial x + 1 is a factor of the polynomial function ƒ(x) = 2x3 – 9x2 + 13x – 6.

No, because ƒ(c) = –4

Yes

No, because ƒ(c) = 14

No, because ƒ(c) = –30

Mark O.

Shouldn't the binomial be x - 1? x + 1 will not work.

This question is well designed to determine whether the student knows the material in the Remainder & Factor Theorems.  Many students will try synthetic division putting 1 in the "slot" and they will obtain remainder zero, thus leading them to an incorrect conclusion because they failed to recognize that division by (x-c) requires putting c into the slot; when c is negative, as for example c= -1, they fail to realize x+1 = x-c and thus c = -1.
