I find it useful to draw a crude diagram. Let’s have you draw a short vertical line (the first sapling), then move over to the right about an inch, draw a second line (second sapling), move over again, draw another sapling, move over again, and draw the fourth sapling.
you have the four saplings. Now between the first and second sapling, write the number “3/4”. Next between the second and third sapling, write another “3/4”. Finally between the third and fourth saplings, write another “3/4”.
Now you have four saplings, with adjacent saplings 3/4 metre apart.
So how far apart are the first and last saplings? Add up all the 3/4’s, and you’ll have your answer.
