Jennifer, the steps are as follows: x + (x+9) = 65 Start by combining like-terms: 2x + 9 = 65 Subtract 9 from both sides: 2x + 9 - 9 = 65 - 9 2x = 56 Divide both sides by 2: 2x/2 = 56/2 x = 28 The two numbers are 28 (which was x) and 37 (which was x+9) Good idea to check: 28 + 37 = 65 (ok)
