suppose that you have entered a 62 mile biathlon that consist of a run and a bicycle race. during your run your average velocity is 8 miles per hr. and during your bicycle race your average velocity is 20 miles per hr. you finish the race in 4 hours what is the distance of the bicycle race? what is the distance of the Run?

Run for x miles and t hours

Bike for 62-x miles and 4-t hours

 

distance = rate*time ... d = rt

 

62 = 8t + 20(4-t)

62 = 8t + 80 - 20t

-18 = -12t

t = 1.5 hour for the run ... 8 mph = 12 mile run

 

The bike race is 62-x = 50 miles on bike
