A store sells a 1-L can of paint for $9.60 and a 4-L can of paint for $20.80. The store has 140 cans of paint, for a total selling price of $2206.40. Write a linear system that models the situation.

Let x = number of 1 L cans

Let y = number of 4 L cans

 

x + y = 140

9.6x + 20.8y = 2206.4

 

You have a system of linear equations.  Solve by substitution.

x = 140-y  from 1st equation

 

9.6(140-y) + 20.8y = 2206.4

1344 - 9.6y + 20.8y = 2206.4

11.2y = 862.4

y = 77 of the 4 L cans of paint

 

x = 140-y = 63 of the 1 L cans of paint
