Creating and solving linear equations based on worded problems

'The ratio of the length to the width to the height of a rectangular prism is 2:1:3 and the sum of the lengths of all its edges is 360 cm. Calculate the height of of this rectangular prism.'

Let width = x

Let length = 2x

Let height = 3x

 

Then the sum of all its edges is

 

4(2x) + 4x + 4(3x) = 360

 

Solve for x.

2:1:3 means there are 6 total parts. 360/6 = 60

 

If the height is 3 of those parts, 3(60) = 180 cm

 

It doesn't ask, but the length is 2(60) = 120 and the width is the last 60.
