Question

I need to simplify x^2+9/x^2-9 times x-3/x+3, but x^2+9 is prime so it can't be factored. HELP!

(x² + 9) factors out to (x - 3i)(x + 3i).  Complex factors.  Therefore,

 

(x - 3i)(x + 3i) / (x - 3)(x + 3)

(x^2+9)/(x^2-9) * (x-3)/(x+3)

(x^2+9)/[(x-3)(x+3)] * (x-3)/(x+3)

(x^2+9)(x-3)

(x-3)(x+3)(x+3)

cancel out the (x-3)'s

(x^2+9)

(x+3)(x+3)

 

(x^2+9)

----------

(x+3)^2
