Hello Tammy,
This is a proportional problem and can be set up as follows:
meters/seconds = meters/seconds
Now, let's plug what we do know, okay?
We know Andrea can run 50 meters in 7.2 seconds, right?
Therefore: the first part of the proportional equation is as follows:
50/7.2 = unknown meters/60 seconds (there are 60 seconds in a minute)
Therefore:
50/7.2 = x/60 This is our proportional equation. We good so far?
Now, since this is a proportional equation and we do have an equal sign between two ratios or fractions, we CAN cross-multiply to solve, right? So, let's do that.
Cross multiplication means we take the numerator from the left side and multiply it by the denominator on the right. And we then take the denominator from the left and multiply it by the numerator on the right.
So, we now have:
7.2x = 3000
Now solve for x.
x = 416.666 or 416.67
416.67 meters is the answer.
Does this make sense to you?
Please let me know in a follow up question whether you need anything further with this problem.
