There are multiple ways to answer this question.  One way is to find the price of each onion. As 4 onions cost $1.70, you can divide 1.70 by 4 to find the price of each onion, 0.425 or 42.5 cents.  Now to find how many onions can be bought for $25, divide $25 by .425 to get about 58.8. So with $25 you can buy 58 onions. 

 

You can also also set up a proportion to solve this problem

 

4 onions                x onions

---------      =      -------------

$1.70                       $25

You can work this as a proportion.

 

n = number of onions

 

4 / $1.70 = n / $25.00

 

n = ($25.00/$1.70)(4) ≅ 58.8

 

Assuming you cannot buy a fraction of an onion, the answer is 58.
