Hi Zoe...nice question your teacher gave you. First off...I will give you the hints to begin to solve the question, but I won't do it for you. Try to solve it and if you're still having issues...contact me back and I can walk it through with you.
Okay...identify the things you know and the things you don't know.
Known Unknown
figure is a rectangle length of the rectangle
perimeter of the rectangle width of the rectangle
formula for calculating area of rectangle area of rectangle
formula for calculating perimeter of rectangle
the unit of measure is in centimeters or cms
so now...let's work with the knowns. The perimeter is the value we get when you add all the sides together...right? And in this case the problem tells us when we do that, add the sides together, we get 30 cm.
And the definition of a rectangle is that it is a 4-sided polygon with opposite sides being equal and parallel to the opposite.
It may help to draw a rectangle and label the sides. The problem tells us that the longer sides are 3 cm longer that the shorter sides.
So the hints I've give you are the image of the rectangle and that you need to calculate the sides of the rectangle. Adding up the sides should give you 30 cm. Then using the formula for area, you can calculate that.
I've given you the tools, try to work on this and if you're still need some assistance, let me know. I am available for online tutoring if you need.
