Michael J's first part analysis is absolutely correct (& agrees with my earlier answer).
 
But for his statements on 2nd & 3rd parts, I do not agree. Differentiability requires continuity, for sure, but continuity does not guarantee differentiability.
 
What continuity means, in common parlance, is that the function graph can be drawn without lifting the pencil from the paper--i.e. there are no holes of gaps or vertical asymptotes anywhere on the interval [a,b]. But there can be sharp corners or cusps, where derivative does not exist even though f is continuous.
