in 5 minutes, a conveyor belt moves 300 pounds of recyclable aluminum from the delivery truck to a storage area. A smaller belt moves the same quantity of cans the same distance in 7 minutes. If both belts are used, find how long it takes to move the cans to the storage area.

The larger belt moves 300 lb/5 min = 60 lb per minute

 

The smaller belt moves 300 lbs/ 7 min = 42.857142 lb/min.

 

Both of them will move 102.857142 lb/min.

 

So it will take them 300/102.857142 = 2.916 min or 2 and 11/12 min = 2 min and 55 seconds
