i know that the first part is 15y but then do you add 24 subtract 24 is the 24 negative or positive???

The negative stays with the 8, so it could also be rewritten like:

(3)(5y) - (3)(8) or (3)(5y) + (3)(-8)

So the answer is 15y - 24 .
