Let x = the unknown number.  The sum of a number and -9 (x + (-9)) is equal to (=) -20:
 
x + (-9) = -20
x - 9 = 20
 
Solve for x.

Philip,you accidentally dropped the 
negative sign on the -20
 
x + (-9) = -20
x - 9 = -20
add 9 to both sides
x = -20 + 9
x = -11
