How do I write linear systems for this problem?

At a college bookstore, Carla purchased a math textbook and a novel that cost a total of $54, not including tax. If the price of the math textbook is $8 more than 3 times the price of the novel, what is the price of each book?

M + N = 54
M = 3N + 8

You can solve the system of equations via substitution or elimination:

Substitution:
Replace M with 3N+8 in 1st equation
3N + 8 + N = 54
4N = 46
Finish solving for N
Subtract that from 54 to find M

Elimination:
M + N = 54
M = 3N + 8

M + N = 54
M - 3N = 8     subtract
----------------
     4N = 46
Again solve for N
Subtract from 54 to find M
