If you were to walk around the perimeter of a particular building, you would cover 2436 ft. If this rectangular building is 146ft. longer than it is wide, what are the dimensions? in length and width.

By definition the perimeter is 2436 and  P = 2L +2W = 2(L+W):

2(L + W) = 2436

L + W = 1218    {equation 1}

 

length is 146 more than width

L = W + 146     {equation 2}

 

Use substitution replace L with W + 146 in 1st equation

 

(W+146) + W = 1218

2W + 146 = 1218

2W = 1218 - 146

2W =  1072

W = 536 ft

 

L = W + 146 = 682 ft

 

The building is 682 ft by 536 ft

 

Check:  2(L+W) = 2436

           2(682+536) = 2436

           2(1218) = 2436

           2436 = 2436

           This checks.
