x² + 2x - 5 = 0
x² + 2x = 5
x² + 2x + 1 = 5 + 1
(x + 1)² = 6
x + 1 = ±√6
x = ±√6 - 1
 
The two solutions are (√6 - 1) and (-√6 - 1)

It is better to write the solutions this way:
-1 - √6         and           -1 + √6
 
 
Otherwise use parenthesis around the square-root term, to prevent the student from misinterpreting the value.
