Let us call chip #15 and chips that are a multiple of 10 "wining chips."

Let us represent the probability that Carla picks a winning chip by the letter p  (the solution to our problem).

 

There are 50 total chips, and there are 6 winning chips (1 chip number fifteen and 5 even chips(10,20,30,40 and 50)

 

 

We solve for p thusly:

 

The probability that Carla picks a winning chip (p) =   the number of winning chips (6)

                                                                              the number of total chips (50)

 

Therefore, the solution is as follows:  p = 6     which reduces to    3          

                                                            50                              25

 

And the probability (p) that Carla pick number 15 or a chip that is a multiple of 10 is  3

There are 50 likely outcome if Carla chooses a single chip.

 

There is only one way she can choose 15. So P( Choosing 15) = 1 / 50

 

The multiples of 10 through 1 to 50 are 10,20,30,40,50. So there are 5 ways she can choose multiple of 10. So   P(Choosing a Multiple of 10) = 5 / 50

 

There is no way by which she chooses a number which is 15 and also a multiple of 10.

So  P ( Choosing 50 and a multiple of 10) = 0 / 50

 

P ( Choosing 15 or a multiple of 10) = P( Choosing 15) + P(Choosing a Multiple of 10) - P ( Choosing 50 and a multiple of 10)

 

Substituting the above values we get,

 

P ( Choosing 15 or a multiple of 10) = 1/50 + 5/50 - 0/50

                                                    = 6 / 50

                                                    = 3 / 25
