Use the distance formula:
√( (x2-x1)² + (y2-y1)²)
 
Given : (x1,y1) & (x2,y2)
For ex: (2,7) and (5,11)
 
=√( (5-2)² + (11-7)²)
=√( (3)² + (4)²)
=√(9 + 16)
=√(25)
= 5

Good answer, I hope you dont mind me commenting quickly that the reason for the distance formula is that we could draw a triangle with the segment with endpoints (x1,y1), and (x2,y2) as the endpoints of its hypotenuse.  Then the formula makes sense if you remember how to find the length of the hypotenuse.  The height and length of the triangle of course are the difference between the x and y coordinates.
