If you plot the coordinates on the coordinate plane you would find that (-8,4) and (-8, -6) are the left 2 corners of the room/rectangle. Since the X - coordinates are the same, the length of that side would be found by finding the distance between the y - coordinates for those 2 ordered pairs. You can do this by subtracting the y-coordinates: 4-(-6) = 4+6.
You can find the width of the room/rectangle by doing something similar. By plotting the coordinates you would also find that (-8,4) and (3,4) are the top 2 corners of the room/rectangle. Since the y-coordinates are the same, the width of that side would be found by finding the distance between the x-coordinates, which again can be found by subtracting them: 3-(-8)=3+8.
Hope this helps!
