Michael gave you a correct solution.  There is another way to work this, using the rule that

 

(ab)ⁿ = aⁿbⁿ

 

By the way, you do not need both the () and [] around mc.  One or the other is sufficient.

 

E = (mc)² = m²c² = 3²6² = 324

E = [(3*6)]² = 18² = 324

 

Order of operations says to perform any operations with parentheses (or brackets) first, then exponents
