The weight of smelt is a normal variable with mean 1.5 ounces and standard deviation of 0.2 ounces. Find the probability that a randomly selected  smelt weighs more than 1.348 ounces.

First calculate the number of standard deviations:

(1.348-1.5)/.2=-.76

 

Then use Excel to find the probability under a normal distribution curve up to .76 std deviations below average:

normsdist(-.76)=.2236
