Solve for x: x^2 < 64

x< 64

values for x to graph on number line

There is a shortcut in solving this problem.

In general if (x^2) < b^2   then  it is the same as saying |x| < b    and   so   -b<x<b

In this case X^2 < 64 or (x^2) < (8^2)  is the same as saying |x| < 8    therefore    -8<x<8

Note: |x| is called absolute value of x

Also: if  |x| < b   =>   -b<x<b
but if    |x| >b  then     x>b  or x<-b

You can always check your answers by plugging in values for x and see if it works!

|x–a| is the distance of x from a.

So |x–a| ≤ b can be graphed as

<––––*=========*––––>
        a–b       a         a+b

In High School Algebra students should
have learned the Identity √(a^2) == |a|.
