7/4 + 5/1 = 9/W

 

7/4 + 20/4 = 9/W   <--- common denominator is 4

 

27/4 = 9/W       <--- adds the fractions on the left side

 

27 * W = 4 * 9    <--- cross multiplies

 

27 * W = 36   

 

W = 36/27            <--- divides by 27

 

 W = 4/3             <--- reduces to lowest terms by a factor of 9

 

      or 1 and 1/3 = 1.33333.....

On the contrary, if you meant

 

7/4 = 9/(W-5)  then you can skip right to the cross multiplication step.

 

7(w-5) = 9 * 4

 

7w - 35 = 36   <--- distributes the 7 on the left

 

7w = 71

 

 w = 71/7 = 10 and 1/7 = 10.142857142857142857.....
