the senior class at high school a and high school b planned separate trips to the state fair. High school a rented and filled 5 vans and 14 buses with 494 students. High school b rented and filled 4 vans and 14 buses with 482 students. every bus has the same number of students in it as did the buses.  How many student can a van carry? how many students can a bus carry

5V + 14B = 494

4V + 14B = 482

 

subtracting these equations:  V = 12

Plugging this into the second equation:   4(12) + 14B = 482

                                                                 48   + 14B =  482

                                                                           14B =   434

                                                                               B = 434/14 = 31                              

 

check:   5V + 14B = 5(12) + 14(31) = 60 + 434 = 494

 

So the van can carry 12 students and the bus can carry 31 students
