1) Jill sold half of her comics books and then brought sixteen more. She now has 36. With how many did she begin?

 

2) On Tuesday shanice bought five hats. On wed half of hall the hats that she had were destroyed. On Thursday there were only 17 left. How many did she have on Monday? Thank you

Use algebra

 

1. Assume Jill had 'x' number of comics to begin with

 

she sold half of it. She is left with x/2

she bought 14 more so now she has x/2 + 14 which is equal to 36. write equation

 

x/2 + 14 = 36

 

x/2 = 22

 

x= 44

 

2. Assume Shanice had 'x' hats on Monday

 

on Tuesday she bought 5 more hats. now she has x + 5 hats

on Wednesday half of the hats were destroyed, now she has (x+5)/2 left which is equal to 17. Write its equation

 

(x+5)/2 = 17

 

x+5 = 34

 

x = 29
