can you use units of measurement as variables?

If you are looking for length which is the same as the width, however you are given a height and total volume, how would you calculate it? While doing this, could you use the unit of measurement (meters) as a variable?

 

Ex. y(length) x y(height) x 0.2m(width) = 100m³

 

Does 100 m x m x m = 100m³?

 

I was on a debate that a unit of measurement cannot be used as variables themselves or on their own. Which one is correct?

Yes, you can. you substitute both the number and the name of the units (e.g. 10 cm) into a formula such as V = s³

and you get 100 cubic cm.
