Distance Rate Time

Question

Two automobiles each travel 60 km at steady rates. One car goes 6 km/h than the other, thereby taking 20 minutes less time for the trip. Find the rate of the slower car. 

 

I'm having difficulties setting up my equation...

 

I have 60/x + 1/3 = 60/(x-6)   not sure if this is right

 

Please let me know if the 1/3 hr should go somewhere else. Thanks

Hi Gnarls

Distance traveled by each car is the same 60 km

 

speed = distance /time

let V= speed of the faster car

then V - 6 = speed of slower car

Let t= time taken by faster car

the t + 1/3 = time taken by slower car.

 

 

 

t= 60/V and    Eq 1

 

(t+1/3) =60/(V-3)... Eq 2
