Yes.  The weight of heavier items over stresses the shelve.  If the weight exceeds shelf weight capacity, then the shelf will collapse.  This will cause all the other items below the shelf to also collapse.

 

You would not want a frail person carrying a heavyweight boxing champion.  It is too much weight on the frail person, and will cause the person beneath to collapse.
