a player is shooting a target at a fair . if he hits the target he receives 50 penny but if he misses he has to pay 20 penny for the shot. After 15 shots, he finds he has made a profit of $ 1.20. How many hits has he had?

h + m = 15 -------> m = 15 - h

.5h - .2m = 1.2

 

Substitute!

 

.5h - .2(15 - h) = 1.2

.5h - 3 + .2h = 1.2

.7h = 4.2

h = 6

 

He's had 6 hits!
