This question is on ixl, a learning math an language arts website. my math teacher mr horner says we can use calculators, but the online calculator is saying the input is wrong!??

Make each number an improper fraction

12 1/12   would be  145/12

7   7/12   would be   91/12

Then you can subtract them :

145/12  -  91/12    =    54/12   (remember you only subtract the numerators/ you keep the same denominator)

 

54/12 written as a mixed number is 4 1/2

  Use Associative laws of addition:

 

   12 - 7 + 1/12 - 7/12 =

 

        5   - 6/12 =

 

        4 + 12/12 - 6/12 =

 

         4  6/12 = 4 1/2
