p+3/4=6

Let's eliminate annoying fractions and multiply both sides by 4...

4(p+3/4)=(6)(4)

4p+3=24

Subtract 3 from both sides...

4p+3-3=24-3

4p=21

Divide both sides by 4...

(4p)/4=21/4

p=21/4

 

Let's check our work...

p+3/4=6

(21/4)+(3/4)=6

24/4=6

6=6

subtract 3/4 from both sides

so...

p + 3/4 - 3/4 = 6 - 3/4

the 3/4 - 3/4 is zero so it cancels and you get

p = 6 - 3/4

in order to subtract you need a common denominator, so you multiply the 6 by 4 and get 24 so...

24/4 = 6

therefore you have...

p = 24/4 - 3/4 = 21/4
