The ratio of withs to withouts was 3 to 11. If 5600 were huddled in the forest, how many were withs?

With : withouts = 3:11

 

3 out of every 14 are "withs"

 

(3/14)(5600) = 1,200 withs

Answer 2

Let X = withs and Y = withouts

 

Given X / Y = 3/11

X+Y = 5600

 

X = 3Y /11

On substitution

3Y/11 + Y = 5600

or

( 3Y +11 Y) = 5600x11

14 Y = 5600x 11

Y = (5600x11) /14 = 400x11 = 4400

and X = 5600 -4400 = 1200
