How do I solve the equation and check the solution

       Your goal is to find out what 1x would equal. You do this by dividing both sides of the equation by the coefficient ( the number in front of the variable) In this case  12x/12 = 72/12     x=6

 The way you check this is by substituting 6 for x in the equation.  12*6 = 72
