Yeah I have a BC student whose teacher gave some tips on trig substitutions. Basically if you see:
 
x²-a² use secθ
a²-x² use sinθ
a²+x² use tanθ (all these make sense if you think of the Pythagorean identity). You can learn a lot from your students' teachers!
