Im trying to brush up on my algebra for either the ASVAB or the NCLEX (havent decided which yet) and this eqation is on the ASVAB practice test, it is worded "which of the following is equivilant to y-2y8y-6  a) 0 b)1 c)-1 d)y^3"  on the asnwer section it says 1 is the correct answer but I have no idea how they are getting there.

The questioner didn't rewrite the question properly... " y-2y8y-6 " should actually be

written as « y^-2 y⁸ y^-6 ».

Using the exponent rules for algebra, the expression is simplified as follows:

y^-2 y⁸ y^-6 = y^{[ -2 + 8 + (-6) ]} = y⁰ = 1

and thus, the answer is "b".
