1) What signs and symptoms would you expect to see from otitis interna (inner ear infection)? Why?

 

2) Explain why infectious otitis media (inflammation of the middle ear) may result in a simultaneous pharyngitis (inflammation of the throat).

Answer 1

The signs and symptoms would largely depend upon the severity and extent of the infection. You can experience tinnitis, dizziness, vertigo and some degree of hearing loss too . Pain and fever should be obvious signs in case of a severe infection. 

 

The eustachian tube is the passage between the ear and the throat (pharynx). It opens in the middle ear cavity. Due to this direct connection a pharyngitis may follow an otitis media.

1- dizziness, vertigo because it affects the inner ear which is used with balance.

2- otitis media involves the the middle ear which is connected to the pharynx and drainage from the ear to the pharynx  can obviously cause irritation and infection. Sometimes a pharyngeal infection will also affect the middle ear as well.

I suggest that you look up pictures of the actual structures to get a sense of where they lay in the body. Then look up otitis interna and otitis media and review the symptoms and associated conditions.
